1 Placemat
1 yard of trim for the top
60 inches of ribbon (for handle)
1 set of magnetic closures
Ok, so to find the center for emb. design placement, I fold the place mat in half and find the center in both directions.
Now unfold and fold the sides together, this will give you the center vertically.
For the stabilizer, I use a paper backed adhesive stabilizer. I hoop it, then press the placemat onto it. The placemats are fairly thick to hoop. Also you could get hoop burns on these. You could use spray, or water activated adhesive, whatever method you prefer.
If you get these with the nap, they are like a low pile chenille or something... anyway, be sure to use something on top to keep the stitches from sinking into the pile. Some water soluble clear topper, or you could use vinyl or probably even the Glad press-n-seal.
I don't like redwork or toile designs as well on these because of the nap, but I did do a toile from Emb. Library and it turned out nicely, following the above steps. So, don't totally exclude those ideas.
fold bag, right sides together, in half. sew side seams.
Refold the bag, into a triangle at the corners. Mark it at 1 ½ inches and sew on that line.
find the center of the bag at the top and cut two holes in each side close together to apply the closure, the instructions come with them.
be careful not to cut your trim and that your closure will be hidden under the trim.
for the handles, just cut two (wide grosgrain ribbon) pieces 30 inches long.
Mark these 6" from the ends. Now, I cut mine to points, you know, fold them in half and take out a notch. Then I apply seam sealant to them so they won't fray later.
Ok, now, I do the placemats that have the corners cut off, so I put the handles on that point, just inside of it. So, just mark your placement and sew them on with a straight stitch. Once sewn you can tie the knots in them to hide the stitches.
Add the trim to the tops of the bag. Stitch close to the upper edge and trim the extra from the sides when finished.
I sew the side seams just inside of the existing stitching, not as bulky to sew.
